Mon prémiere travail en France (my first job in france)

Mon prémiere travail en France. my first job in france. Le Nouvel Observateur is one of the biggest new magazines in France.  I did a full page and a spot illustration for them.  emails and communication were in french so it really was a "french" job.  story is about dating services for the rich.  There is one that is 5,000 euros to join.  some of the clients make crazy requests like they must be 1 meter 82 centimers, Argentine, a surgeon, own a helicopter, graduated from Harvard, etc....

Les Parisiens - Catharina Le Progres

Les Parisiens (the Parisians) A new personal project:  illustrating select people that I see around Paris.  Here is Catharina in front of cafe “Le Progrès”.  Jacket by “Mimi’s Beer”.  We talked to her for a bit and took photos but I found that the sponteneous ones from earlier made for more interesting poses.  Un nouveau projet personnel:  Dessiner une sélection des gens que je vois autour de Paris.  Voici Catharina devant le Café “Le Progrès”.  Veste par “Mimi’s Beer”.

Family Love

spot for Emory Alumni magazine.  An alumni author writes about the hardships and joys of caring for a child with down's syndrome.  The art director told me that when the author saw this she cried (in a good way).

Collapse

Collapse is a non fiction book by Jared Diamond, the author of Guns,Germs, and Steel. Collapse is about the collapse of great civilizations like the Mayans, Easter Islanders, etc... there are something like 7 factors that seem to cause the downfall of societies. One that seemed to be uniform throughout was that they would cut down their trees, the soil would blow away and then they were f'd. The Easter islanders were a totally isolated island so they are the perfect study for collapse. The warlords kept trying to outdo each other by building bigger statues (Moai) using up the islands resources. The huge red rocks on top were supposed to be especially impressive. One sentence resonated with me was "What did the Easter Islander who cut down the last palm tree say while he was doing it?” His answer was something like when you're in there you don't realize it and you can't realize that you could be responsible for all this. The correlation between these past fallen societies and today are made, because we are making the same mistakes. It is great (but a depressing) read. One big thing i took away from this is, cut down all the trees and you're f'd.

Some pages from a hemp paper sketchbook where i sawed off about 25% of it so it was taller and skinner.  I like this wide format.  As you can see I haven't really had the time to take advantage this wide format that much and have just been using it as a regualar sketchbook

i mess up people all the time so i decided to really mess them up after the fact.  Sorry Hyun.

Year of the Snake 2013 Japanese New Year's Card

acrylic painting process.  this is the one time of year that i do a 100% non digital painting with acrylic, colored pencils, pens, whatever.  Here are a few process shots.

I lived in Tokyo for a year and a half until the big earthquake and during that time I took to the Japanese tradition of sending out a new years postcard with that year's asian zodiac animal.  The post office there holds all of these new years postcards and magically delivers them all on January 1st.  2013 is the year of the snake.  red snakes are good luck and white snakes are the embodiments of gods.  The bottom left says "Happy New Year", the single character at the top is "snake" but this character is special and only used to refer to the year of the snake and different one is used in everyday language.  On the right it says 2013 (with a complex Japan specific year numbering system).  The bad thing about gold paint is that it doesn't reproduce well at all.  the good thing is that the real painting looks awesome with gold paint.  Happy New Year!

Vacature Magazine - My First European Job

My first European job !!! (continental europe not counting all the UK jobs i've had).  Cover for Vacature magazine in Belgium.  Its about the 12 sectors that are hiring in 2013 in Belgium.  they wanted a me to change his skin to a realistic tone and then open up his eyes (he's looking down so that was a challenge to say the least) and then add more blue squares to super flesh out the shape of the guy.  and then in the end it got killed.  let's just say there were too many non-art directors involved in the final decision.

this is the cover they ended up using.

spots that did end up running inside the magazine.  insurance, financial and banking services

flemish government (this lion dude is on the flemish flag), federal government

technology, chemistry, health industry, energy

pharmaceuticals, construction, e-commerce, automotive
