Movie Inspiration - Wong Kar Wai's "In the Mood for Love"

More movie inspiration posts. This movie cemented me being a Wong Kar Wai fan. I saw Chung King Express when i was 18 and I liked it, I have to watch it again because when you're 18 you're a dumb@ss and don't even know what you're seeing. I've also seen 2046 (i fell asleep) and Fallen Angels. I just watched My Blueberry nights, his latest starring Nora Jones. Although a beautiful movie, It wasn't so hot. So to keep your faith in Wong Kar Wai alive here are some of my favorite captures from "In the Mood for Love". A beautiful, colorful, painful and long movie. Maggie's dresses are amazing throughout the movie. The soundtrack is the bomb, he uses 3 Nat King Cole songs in spanish! It also some great string pieces. The Cinematography in this film is on point! So are the shot compositions. he doesn't rush anything. A visually inspirational movie for me.
I am an analogous color schemes guy so i'm really into this
check out the red on green! in the wrong hands it would end up all christmasy.
i am also into patterns and maggie had on many amazing Qipaos (i just learned that word here in china)

this was for midwest airlines inflight magazine, my midwest. its an article about saying no in the office place. studies show that women are very susceptible to saying yes to extra projects and being taken advantage of. The power of saying no, i am woman hear me roar.

one of the first jobs from China
This is one of the first jobs i have done from china. its for the hartford courant. it was an article about this ella fitzgerald musical show that started in hartford and is now returning or something like that. the art director was great to work with she said just give me a great looking portrait and was cool with everything i had. i'm trying to get some Chinese visual influences while i'm here. I could'nt really go crazy with this one because it is supposed to be americana jazz but i will incorporate some more chinese like florals and etc... later on in something!

Talks at highschools

I went home to upstate NY to visit my parents last week and gave talks at a couple highschools, my old high school and the highschool my mother teaches at. I talked to about 6 classes in total. Not much has changed so this is probably the only time these students will talk to someone who works in the creative field. I hope i inspired someone at least. I wish i had that when i was in that little town, it would have inspired me.

Movie Inspiration - Wes Anderson's "The Darjeeling Limited"

Movies are a big influence for me. I try to take screenshots of movies I like visually. Wes Anderson makes beautiful, colorful movies and his latest "The Darjeeling Limited" is no exception. It is set in India so of course the colors are amazing. Anderson is such an artist. His compositions are on point not to mention that I love his quirky dry sense of humor and the music he chooses. I love the wide format of film, I wish more illustrations were commissioned in this dimension. Lots of people might not like the humor but you've gotta appreciate the beauty of his shots.

This is a self promotional piece I did that will be my full page ad in the next Directory of Illustration source book that comes out in the fall. I am influenced a lot by movies so "Amelie", "Mind Game", and "Tekkon Kinkreet" were my big influences here, especially in the color department.

Collections and Credit Risks magazine
this is a trade magazine cover. its about the presidential race. the image of calvin and hobbes speeding precariously down a hill in their little red wagon immediately popped into my head. I gave the art director some extra cropping room at the top and bottom. I think i am maturing as a colorist at least (maybe not in any other ways). I used to color things at full blast saturation but these days i am starting to realize thats not always good and to use the power of muted colors. or maybe i'm just getting old. I'm pretty happy with this one.

I found this in a stack of stuff while i was cleaning on to prepare for my move to china. i drew this in college at some point probably when i was supposed to be paying attention. i dont know where this chip'n'dales imagery came from but this is probably the best thing i ever did in school. why dont i do more of this now!

I had the good fortune of seeing my brother bob this weekend. I drew him on some restaurant placemats. It's always funny at these family gatherings when the relatives laugh at my drawings of bob because it further drives the whole thing home. these last two are totally rediculous. It's not even if i capture his likeness or not anymore at this point. it's the fact that i've drawn him so many times in these situations where he really has no choice but to sit there and be examined by me. This annoys him, not enough for him to be angry but just enough that it brings me joy and makes me giggle like a school girl. if you're dying to see better sketches of bob they are here the Book of Bob

More Tanuki

More tanuki action. this the back of the card. i drew his whole body thinking someday i might use it also i forgot to add the black rings around the eyes on the tanuki with the sake. **UPDATE** This tanuki imagery was deemed too "racist". The guy on the back especially. Which I can see where they are coming from. It's a coincidence that he is a Japanese raccoon like creature wearing one of those Asian straw hats and has especially slanty eyes because he is smiling so hard and has huge teeth and gums. Really i didn't think about all that when i was making this. and they felt that people who see this are not going to know that I am Asian and definitely not demeaning myself. I mean really he is just a character, so i made the argument that if i removed all of the asian elements from the images like the Japanese writing and the sake and the hat then he would just look like a funny rodent character so they agreed. I will post up those revisions later.

Tanuki

I did this for the graphics lab at FIT. They said i could do anything i wanted as the image for their new promotional postcard. I said great! This is a Tanuki. they are a mythical Japanese raccoon-like creature that likes to get drunk and be mischievous. The often carry around their book of unpaid bills and a jug of sake. The background is modeled from memory after one of my favorite spots to drink in NYC "Kenka". Kenka has a stuffed tanuki sitting on their cash register counter and i sketched it months ago and kept exaggerating it more until it got to this. I like to envision that this is the night that he comes into Kenka, ready to drink, and the staff has had the final straw and are tired of this Tanuki not paying his bills and they take him in the back and stuff him and display him on the counter. The illo has some nice details so click on it to make it bigger!

Utne magazine illo
This is for an article about chess players being recruited by colleges to boost their image, as if they were football or basketball stars. I needed a dorky guy to model as the chess player so I got my brother bob who is working on his PHD in math (he is a self proclaimed dork so this isn't a mean blog post). I've used lots of my friends as reference in illustrations but this is the first one of bob, and it won't be the last!

Seattle Weekly Cover
They had the idea of doing the cover like the poster for the Movie "Major League". It was a totally silly article about the fate and politics of the Seattle Supersonics basketball team. The writer listed who he would cast in his "Major League Supersonic" movie.
