this is a trade magazine cover. its about the presidential race. the image of calvin and hobbes speeding precariously down a hill in their little red wagon immediately popped into my head. I gave the art director some extra cropping room at the top and bottom. I think i am maturing as a colorist at least (maybe not in any other ways). I used to color things at full blast saturation but these days i am starting to realize thats not always good and to use the power of muted colors. or maybe i'm just getting old. I'm pretty happy with this one.

I found this in a stack of stuff while i was cleaning on to prepare for my move to china. i drew this in college at some point probably when i was supposed to be paying attention. i dont know where this chip'n'dales imagery came from but this is probably the best thing i ever did in school. why dont i do more of this now!

I had the good fortune of seeing my brother bob this weekend. I drew him on some restaurant placemats. It's always funny at these family gatherings when the relatives laugh at my drawings of bob because it further drives the whole thing home. these last two are totally rediculous. It's not even if i capture his likeness or not anymore at this point. it's the fact that i've drawn him so many times in these situations where he really has no choice but to sit there and be examined by me. This annoys him, not enough for him to be angry but just enough that it brings me joy and makes me giggle like a school girl. if you're dying to see better sketches of bob they are here the Book of Bob

3x3 Illustration Directory

This came out last month and I have two pages in here. It's 3x3 magazine's first annual illustration directory. They sent this out to 4,400 art directors, agencies, etc... I can't believe I'm in there with the big dogs of illustration. Let's hope i get a call from this

More Tanuki

More tanuki action. this the back of the card. i drew his whole body thinking someday i might use it also i forgot to add the black rings around the eyes on the tanuki with the sake. **UPDATE** This tanuki imagery was deemed too "racist". The guy on the back especially. Which I can see where they are coming from. It's a coincidence that he is a Japanese raccoon like creature wearing one of those Asian straw hats and has especially slanty eyes because he is smiling so hard and has huge teeth and gums. Really i didn't think about all that when i was making this. and they felt that people who see this are not going to know that I am Asian and definitely not demeaning myself. I mean really he is just a character, so i made the argument that if i removed all of the asian elements from the images like the Japanese writing and the sake and the hat then he would just look like a funny rodent character so they agreed. I will post up those revisions later.

Tanuki

I did this for the graphics lab at FIT. They said i could do anything i wanted as the image for their new promotional postcard. I said great! This is a Tanuki. they are a mythical Japanese raccoon-like creature that likes to get drunk and be mischievous. The often carry around their book of unpaid bills and a jug of sake. The background is modeled from memory after one of my favorite spots to drink in NYC "Kenka". Kenka has a stuffed tanuki sitting on their cash register counter and i sketched it months ago and kept exaggerating it more until it got to this. I like to envision that this is the night that he comes into Kenka, ready to drink, and the staff has had the final straw and are tired of this Tanuki not paying his bills and they take him in the back and stuff him and display him on the counter. The illo has some nice details so click on it to make it bigger!

Utne magazine illo
This is for an article about chess players being recruited by colleges to boost their image, as if they were football or basketball stars. I needed a dorky guy to model as the chess player so I got my brother bob who is working on his PHD in math (he is a self proclaimed dork so this isn't a mean blog post). I've used lots of my friends as reference in illustrations but this is the first one of bob, and it won't be the last!

Seattle Weekly Cover
They had the idea of doing the cover like the poster for the Movie "Major League". It was a totally silly article about the fate and politics of the Seattle Supersonics basketball team. The writer listed who he would cast in his "Major League Supersonic" movie.

I need to start getting something that looks like book covers in my portfolio so when i go to meet these art directors they stop looking at me like im a jerk. Here is one idea i had a few years ago that I finally executed. "marinade your mind" : a look at today's drinking culture, written by jason raish. I am not a good graphic designer. After looking at tons of cool book covers i've decided that being a book cover designer would be pretty cool if i wasn't an illustrator. Especially if your Chip Kidd or Ben Gibson or someone like that. I dont know if this works better with the beer on his brain or about to hit it.

I found this book that I made when i was 8 yrs old in 3rd grade back in 1990. It's about Paul Bunyan and his Blue Ox babe, and the grand canyon. Let's take a look at this thing.
the cover - what an ameatur piece of work this is. It's just stapled together and drawn on obviously non archival paper. Horrible font choices. and way to not make grand canyon ledgible Jason you little retard. and what is babe standing on? air? and why does it just say jason raish in pencil after paul bunyan? do you mean by jason raish? this is the fault of both the artist and 3rd grade teacher, bad editing and proofing.
dedication page - I was such a fool to dedicate this to the grand canyon. It's long since forgotten me and probably was never even my friend in the first place. Even when I flew over it a few years ago to go to LA to visit some friends it didnt even look at me.
page 1 - what a little retard I was, and still am. way to take into account the gutter 8 yr old jason and lose a bunch of your words. (the gutter is where book is bound)
page 3 - I think that guy running away is kind of funny. It's sad but thats about the quality of the sketches I give art directors now in 2008
page 4 - watever
page 5 - I dont think i made that up out of my head. Looks like even back then I had no imagination and was a slave to photo reference.
Author's page - it says it took me three days to complete this book. it would probably take me 3 years to do this book now because i have lost all the magic of childhood and am now a late 20's something anal old man that listen's to pre-war jazz.
Comments page - I get the same comments now because my art only appeals to 8 yr old goblins. I'm such a good Pitcher and Illustrashans maker!

Bob

only 2 new entries in the saga of bob. I was totally paralyzed this holiday season and could only watch tv and eat. These sketches are pretty bad but i think they have captured the essence of bob and his new changes. Bob is getting a little of a belly now and i like the little sketch to the side that i did in 5 minutes better than that horrible attempt at shading his face. the second sketch shows bob glazed over from too much holiday cheer, horrible drawing but i captured the essence of the disgusting moment.

These were for a year end issue of network world. I had to illustrate one of the smartest and one of the dumbest Technology moves made this year. They gave me a list of choices. The smartest is about google's "G Phone" development. They are making the phone open source and working with a many different developers unlike apple's IPHone. The dumbest is about ghost bloggers. CEO's and executives that have fake blogs made for them that they don't write themselves.

Health Data Management cover

the cover for health data management this month. it was a very hard topic to illustrate because i had very little to go on and pretty vague. It was about executives, it guys, doctors, nurses, hospital staff working together to find the right mobile software and hardware "solutions" Sounds so exciting right? sometimes you gotta make lemons into lemonade. I gave them 2 versions, one with the paint texture "platform" they're standing on and one without. they ended up going with the platform version.

Seattle Weekly spot illo

This is in this weeks seattle weekly. its about Judy Collins, a 60's music star who is now sequined dressed'd up and performing at supper club type joints. They said it was necessary that it be a sequined dress so i didnt panic and knew that i could figure something out. At first i extracted some actual sequins and tried putting hundreds of them on her dress and it looked horrible. if i had to paint them i would cry. this is one of the times im truly grateful for photoshop. the secret is i just used a default photoshop flower brush and a sparkle brush to achieve the over sequin look. it reduced down and published small enough that i think it worked! sometimes i get too obsessive about individual elements when i just need to look at what i need to do to achieve the overall final look.
